Summer (Week of June 14th – August 16th) Online Courses 2021

Homo Praeclarus: St. Thomas Aquinas

Section 1 of this course will run Tuesday at 1 PM Eastern (New York) time.

Section 2 of this course will run Tuesday at 8 PM Eastern (New York) time.

In this course we will sight read selections from Guillaume de Tocco’s 1323 Ystoria sancti Thome de Aquino as well as selections from Aquinas’ own Summa Theologica and Summa contra Gentiles with an eye towards understanding de Tocco’s reception of Aquinas in the generation after Aquinas’s own. No previous experience with Medieval or Scholastic Latin is specifically required, and students will be guided through the chief linguistic features representative of this era of Latin early in the course. Because the course will be conducted in Latin, students should already be comfortable with the basic “Hi, how are you?” Latin conversational skills and have a firm grasp on the basics of Latin grammar. In addition to reading the texts, students can expect to do a number of verbal exercises aimed at improving spoken fluency in the language and receiving coaching about what they can do on their own to improve reading and speaking fluency.

Things you’ll need: Zoom, Headphones, Microphone, Internet sufficient to video-calls, Webcam (optional but preferred)

Course Cost: $200

Course Materials: Instructor will provide materials

Maximum Enrollment per Section: 5

Refund Policy: 100% refund available until 1 week before the first week of the course. 50% refund available until week 2 of the course is completed. No refunds after the completion of week 2 of the course.
