Fall 2021 (Week of Oct 3rd – Week of December 12th) Courses
Beginner’s Active Latin for Experienced Latin Students
Section 1 of this course will run Mondays at 8 PM Eastern (New York) time.
Have you been trained with a reading or grammar translation approach to the Latin language, but are interested in starting the journey to use Latin actively? Then this course is for you! I’ll train you in the rudiments of basic conversational Latin, as well as the skills you’ll need to improve your active use of the language by reading, writing, speaking and listening, and address the ways you can start to use active Latin immediately to improve your own study, teaching, or reading in Latin. Each week we’ll cover a different topic (Study skills, Latin survival phrases, how to read without translating, Latin around the classroom, Latin around the house, Latin grammar in Latin etc.) and read/practice speaking Latin around that topic with instructor guidance, authentic texts and visual aids.
Level: Open to students with a firm grasp on Latin grammar (generally 1.5-2 years of college Latin) but with little or no experience using Latin as a language.
Homework Requirements: The instructor will recommend several hours a week of out-of-class practice using certain reading/listening/writing exercises to get the most out of the course.
Things you’ll need: Zoom, Headphones, Microphone, Internet sufficient to video-calls, Webcam (optional but preferred)
Course Cost: $225
Course Materials: Instructor will provide materials
Maximum Enrollment per Section: 5
Refund Policy: 100% refund available until 1 week before the first week of the course. 50% refund available until week 2 of the course is completed. No refunds after the completion of week 2 of the course.
Guided Latin Conversations
Section 1 of this course will run Tuesdays at 8 PM Eastern (New York) time.
Section 2 of this course will run Saturdays at 10 AM Eastern (New York) time.
Do you already know the basics of Latin conversation and have a good grasp of Latin grammar, but need practice reading & talking with others in a small group environment instead of at a large conference mixed up with people who are already experts at Latin conversation? Each week in this course we will practice talking to one another about our everyday lives and read, at sight, short selections of a variety of texts from the whole history of Latin to use as models for our own Latin speech. Some examples of texts used in this course are selections from the plays of Terence, Erasmus’ colloquia, conversational sections from the Latin Vulgate, the medieval plays of Hrothsvita and Cicero’s letters. Students will also select topics they are interested in and present a short composition to the class at the end of the course, or present on a short selection from Latin literature.
Level: Open to students with a firm grasp on Latin grammar (generally 1.5-2 years of college Latin) and the basics of Latin conversation.
Homework Requirements: Students should expect to write a short assignment in Latin most weeks.

Ancient Magic, Medieval Monsters and Modern Science
Section 1 of this course will run Thursdays at 8 PM Eastern (New York) time.
In this course we’ll practice speaking Latin while reading selections from ancient scientists (Pliny the Elder), Medieval Encyclopedia writers (Isidore of Seville), Medieval Bestiaries (The Aberdeen Bestiary) and Early Modern Scientists (Conrad Gessner), and more, with a focus on the wild, wacky, magical and fantastical. All readings will be taken at sight, with guidance from the instructor. Our goal: to practice active Latin and have a good time doing it, while appreciating literature from a wide variety of eras.
